Network Monitoring Tools

In today’s article, I will discuss about Network Monitoring Tools which are mainly important for NOC (Network Operation Center).

Network Monitoring Tools are used in different technological sectors such as banking, telecommunication (Telcom) and enterprise networks. In each sector, the reason why they use network monitoring Tools will be explained in general overview.

 Banking network has a lot branches of the networks. It is important to detect link up or down condition for branches to branch traffic, network device utilization state and to make decision in bandwidth increasing case for a tremendous amount of banking service usage.

Among multiple networking tools, I would like to equally discuss two commercial network monitoring tools and one open-source network monitoring tool.

 SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
SolarWinds NPM is a commercial NPM tool. According to 2016 Magic Quadrant Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics, Solarwinds got the challenger place. The software is sold as separate modules based on what you use. SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is easy to setup and can be ready in no time. It can automatically discover network devices within an hour. It can widely support for OEM vendors. It can quickly pinpoint network performance issues with critical path visualization feature. Therefore, it is easy for network engineers to track issue back. SolarWinds NPM tool lets network engineers be able to customize the web-based performance dashboards, design a tailored topology for their entire network infrastructure and create customized alerts. Because of the previous flexible features, SolarWinds NPM is widely being used in organizations.

 SevOne
SevOne is hardware appliance-based approach. In 2016 Gartner Chart, SevOne also got the challenger market place. SevOne has the same level with SolarWinds NPM in these features of initial setup and network discovery process. But one strong point of SevOne is that it can provide monitoring abilities with SNMP, ICMP, WMI protocol, Netflow, VM Monitoring, HTTP, JMX, IP Telephony (VOIP), Cisco CallManager, Mediant, DNS, IP SLA, IPFIX, MySQL. Another strong point of SevOne tool is trend prediction. SevOne can give predictive determination of the next resource to reach maximum utilization and how much time may remain until upgrades will be required. SevOne pricing depends on cost per 1000 nodes.

 Zabbix
Zabbix is Open-Source Network Monitoring Tool. It is popular for easy to use and provides a lot of device configuration templates to configure network metrics fully. The strong point of Zabbix monitoring tool is Proactive Network Monitoring feature. We can assume it’s similar with SevOne’s trend prediction. But I think trend prediction of Zabbix is better perfect. It can point out anomaly usage detection based on historical data analysis.

As Zabbix is open-source, it has world-wide active user communities and its documentation is easy to learn. There has one pain point in Zabbxi that it cannot monitor over 1000 nodes in SMB network. Over that, the performance of Zabbix system will decrease gradually. We can buy some customized device configuration templates as support services.

 Summary
Solarwinds and SevOne got the challenger and visionaries in 2019 January Gartner Market Analysis respectively. Zabbix stands as a popular open source network monitoring tool mostly liked by open source users. I would like to suggest that organization should choose relevant network monitoring tool based on their business requirements such as budget, devices and customized ability of each network monitoring tool.
