HCI and Cisco Hyperflex
Firstly, I would like to discuss Applications before HCI discussion. Business Applications are mostly used in Digital Transformation era. A lot of basic hardware resources are required to run the applications with the best performance. In the past few years, applications were run on the standalone servers. Servers with high CPU and Memory have better performance and for this reason, these kinds of servers are mostly used. But, the storage devices are required to store data and set up a network connection with these storage devices. The network connections are also required between the storage server and end users. So, network devices are integrated too. These types were used in traditional and most of the organizations are still using now. But now, Hyper-Converged Infrastructure is now released as new technology.

Within one device, all components (compute, storage and network) are integrated. So, users don’t need to integrate or connect with others. ✔ Firstly, Compute, Storage and Network are integrated together on Hyper-Converged Platform. HCI is automated to be intelligence in the management system of infrastructure. The scaling can perform easily when using VMs and resources are reached the defined limits of HCI capacity. HCI has integration of Compute, Storage and Network. If the system is needed, scaling can be extended by adding these nodes easily.
✔ There are many solution vendors for HCI technology. Solution vendors also considered about the data protection matter before production is started. Data protection techniques such as storage data mirroring, including replication methods, striping and erasure coding are also provided in the HCI technology. And then, HCI can perform VM migration, load balancing and rolling update as bundled software included automation. Therefore, the virtual machines (VMs) which are running on HCI applications can work with no downtime.

✔ I would like to discuss from two sides, IT side and Business side. For the IT side, the current condition has a lot of separate devices. By using HCI application, these devices will integrate into a single box. And then, management will be single management and deployment will become so easy with the best performance.
✔ From the business side, the main advantages are the saving human resources, saving device cost by not buying many types of hardware devices, data security, and best support for business agility with HCI technology.

✔ Cisco HyperFlex Systems is the HCI solution from Cisco and it’s produced as HX series. HX series is provided as a solution service of NEX4 Company based on customer requirements. Cisco HyperFlex has emerged as a product of Cisco HCI by the integration of formal Cisco UCS Foundation and Hybrid cloud management.

✔ There are two types as Hybrid and All-Flash in hardware overview.
✔ Cisco HyperFlex Hybrid nodes are defined as HX220c/240c M4/M5 models.
✔ For All Flash Nodes, there are HX220c/240c AF M4/M5 models.
✔ Edge for Remote and Branch offices, there are HX220c Edge M4/M5 models.
➡ Software Components Overview
✔ As Hybrid or All-Flash Data, there is DataStore/Volume.
✔ Hypervisor – if you want to use VMware hypervisor, it can also support.
✔ Another one is the HX Controller VM (CVM). It can assume the local storage by accessing directly.
✔ IO Visor modules are used for Input-Output Stripes.
✔ Virtual Machines will be run on the hypervisor what we used.
➡ HyperFlex Connectivity
✔ Same with the traditional UCS environment, there is also included the Fabric Interconnects (FI) in HX Series. HyperFlex nodes are connected to the FI-A and FI-B.
✔ At least, there is needed to have three nodes as the first starting stage. The main reason for being at least three nodes is for the clustering and to resist the failures.
✔ In each node, there are separated as one vSwitch for management, one vSwitch for Storage Data, one vSwitch for VM Network and one vSwitch for vMotion.
✔ HX Controller has the connection for Management and storage data.
✔ And HyperFlex has monitoring solution. So, IOPs and Latency can be checked easily.
